just got a proposal request that blew my mind. The potential client said she didn't have time to work on a resume with me, and would therefore need me to pull what I needed from her old resume and do the best I could.
She doesn't have time? She doesn't have time to work on a document that can, quite literally, determine her future? And she's be OK with me doing 'the best I could' with what she already had.
The thing is, this person isn't alone. Lots of job seekers treat writing a resume as a minor inconvenience and then wonder why they don't get a great response to their resume.
This is why I created a resume writing process that demands work of my clients. I want them to have to think about their career and accomplishments. I want them to spend time reflecting on what makes them unique and interesting. I want them to have to work at this, because that will result in a stronger resume and also in stronger interview performance (and better decision-making when it comes time to consider job offers).
Your resume may be the most important document you ever write - find the time!

Thanks! I guess that's what happens when I post a blog with my mind blown :)

What do you want to bet that lack of time was the smokescreen obstacle, and the real obstacle was her apprehension about the whole process (recounting her accomplishments, selling herself and/or embarking on a job search with all that effort it requires).
I think one of the great results of a professional resume is that you are so much better prepared to go into interviews because you've already done a lot of thinking and describing about your achievements and your value proposition!

How true Heather. We often sabotage ourselves without even knowing we're doing it.
